Jump to Recipe
Kielbasa Cabbage Soup is a straightforward soup that can be prepared in just 30 minutes! Packed with cabbage, kielbasa, and potatoes, it is both filling and tasty.
What I love most about this soup, besides its great taste, is how quickly it comes together. You can have it ready on your table in around 30 minutes, making it an ideal choice for hectic weeknights.
Let’s discuss the ingredients you will need to create it.

Kielbasa Cabbage Soup Ingredients:

KIELBASA:

This Polish smoked sausage is commonly found in the United States. It has a U-shape and is usually located near other cured meats in the grocery store.
You can choose either beef or turkey kielbasa. Although beef is the traditional choice, turkey kielbasa is a good alternative and can lighten the dish.

CABBAGE:

Chopped green cabbage works best in larger pieces.

RUSSET POTATOES:

I prefer russet potatoes for soups because they keep their shape and add starch to the mixture. I peeled mine, but for a more rustic feel, you can leave the skins.

OLIVE OIL:

Used for sautéing the garlic and onions.

ONIONS/GARLIC:

These ingredients enhance the flavor of the soup.

CHICKEN BROTH:

I suggest using low-sodium chicken broth so you can manage the overall saltiness. Since kielbasa is already salty, you’ll want to keep a balance.

CARAWAY SEEDS:

One of my favorite spices to pair with cabbage, caraway adds hints of citrus and anise. You should find these in the spice section of your grocery store.

CRUSHED RED PEPPER:

This is optional but recommended for a mild heat.

PARSLEY:

An optional garnish for a splash of color.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:

Preparing Kielbasa Cabbage Soup is incredibly simple. It’s cooked in one pot and comes together quickly. Just follow these steps.

Sauté the onion in olive oil until it becomes translucent.

  1. Mix in the cabbage and cook until it begins to wilt. Add the garlic, caraway seeds, and crushed red pepper.
  2. Pour in the chicken broth and add the potatoes.
  3. Cook until the potatoes can be pierced easily with a fork.
  4. Stir in the kielbasa and heat until it is warmed through.

STEP 1:

In a large soup pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
Add the onion and cook until it softens and looks translucent, around 5 minutes.

STEP 2:

Add the cabbage and let it cook until it starts to soften, about 3 minutes.
Then add the garlic, caraway seeds, and crushed red pepper, if you’re using it.
Cook briefly until you can smell the garlic, about 30 seconds.

STEP 3:

Pour in the chicken broth and add the potatoes.
Cook on medium heat until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
This should take approximately 10 minutes.

STEP 4:

Mix in the kielbasa and cook until it is warmed through.
Adjust salt to taste and add parsley for garnish, if you like. Serve.

Storage Tips:

Store any remaining food in the refrigerator and heat it in a pot on the stovetop or in a bowl in the microwave.

Recipe FAQ:

What is Kielbasa?

Kielbasa is a delicious Polish sausage commonly made from beef and pork. There are also options made with turkey.

What can be used instead of caraway seeds?

Anise seeds can be used as a replacement, but since they are stronger, use half the amount recommended in the recipe.
