You are going to love this Smash Burger Recipe. Simply follow this straightforward guide to create delicious, restaurant-quality burgers in a flash.
In recent years, Smash Burgers have become quite popular on restaurant menus. When I tried one for the first time, I didn’t know what I would be getting, but believe me, they are incredible. The patties are thin and packed with flavor, and the edges have just the right amount of crunch.
That scrumptious flavor comes from just the patty. When you add a perfectly toasted bun, a burger spread, and your favorite toppings, Smash Burgers will surely become your go-to hamburger. And there’s a bonus! You can easily prepare them at home in your own kitchen.
Now, let’s go over what you need to create them.
Smash Burger Ingredients:
You don’t require many ingredients to prepare smash burgers. The variety comes mainly from the toppings you decide to add. For making them, you will need:
GROUND BEEF:
The ideal ground beef for this recipe has a ratio of 80/20, meaning 80% lean meat and 20% fat. This combination gives you tasty burgers and helps them stay intact.
GARLIC POWDER/ONION POWDER/GROUND MUSTARD/PAPRIKA:
A mix of spices to flavor the beef patties.
WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE:
This adds a rich umami taste to the ground beef.
SALT/PEPPER:
You will add salt and pepper to the patties as they cook, instead of mixing them with the beef ahead of time. This method is crucial because putting salt in too soon can change how the burgers turn out.
BURGER BUNS:
Any type of burger bun can work for this recipe, but I find that Brioche Buns are the best. When they are toasted, they hold up nicely against the toppings without becoming soggy.
YOUR FAVORITE BURGER TOPPINGS:
In my house, this typically includes shredded lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, red onions, and of course, my favorite burger spread.

Step by Step and Instructions:
Making a Smash Burger is quite similar to making a regular burger, except you will be pressing them into thin patties during cooking. Rather than forming 4 patties for a pound of ground beef, you’ll create 8 (2-ounce) patties. It’s helpful to use a kitchen scale, but if you don’t have one, just divide the beef into 8 equal portions. For smashing, I recommend using a Smash Burger Press like this one (Affiliate link).
- Mix together the spices and ground beef in a bowl until just combined.
- Shape into 8 (2-ounce) balls. Cover the mixture and chill for 30 minutes.
- Cook the smash burgers in a cast iron skillet. Once the cheese starts melting, place the uncheesed patty on top of the cheese-covered one.
- Toast the buns, if you wish.
STEP 1:
In a bowl, mix ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir until blended but be careful not to over mix, or the burgers might turn out tough.
STEP 2:
After mixing, shape the beef into 8 balls, each weighing 2 ounces. Put them in the refrigerator covered for at least 20 minutes, although you can prepare them hours ahead of time.
STEP 3:
To start cooking, warm up a cast iron skillet or griddle at medium-high heat. Lay the cold burger balls onto the hot surface and press them down with a burger press. Season with salt and pepper and let them cook for about 2 to 3 minutes.
STEP 4:
Turn the burgers over and place cheese on top of one patty if desired. Keep cooking until the cheese begins to melt. Then, add the second patty over the cheesed one.
STEP 5:
On the same griddle used for the burgers, toast the burger buns.
STEP 6:
Build your burgers using your choice of toppings and serve them.
Storage and Leftovers:
Like any burger, once they are assembled, Smash Burgers taste best right away. However, you can make and refrigerate the meatballs several hours before cooking. Just take them out when you are ready to prepare them.

Ingredients
– 1 pound 80/20 Ground Beef
– 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
– 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic
– 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
– 1/2 teaspoon paprika
– 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
– 4 Brioche burger buns
– Lettuce
– Tomatoes
– Sliced red onion
– 4 slices of Pepperjack Cheese
– 1/4 cup of Burger Spread

Instructions
– Mix the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, granulated garlic, onion powder, paprika, and ground mustard in a bowl until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the burgers tender.
– Once mixed, divide the beef into 8 pieces and roll them into balls, each weighing 2 ounces. Cover and chill for no less than 20 minutes, though preparing them hours beforehand is also possible.
– Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle to medium-high heat when you’re ready to cook. Place the chilled burger balls on the hot surface and press them flat with a burger press. Add salt and pepper, then cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the edges are brown and crispy.
– Flip the burgers and add cheese on top of one patty if desired. Continue cooking until the cheese melts. Stack the other patty on top of the one with cheese.
– Toast the burger buns on the same griddle used for cooking the burgers by putting them cut side down and heating for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until they reach your preferred toastiness.
– Assemble burgers with your favorite toppings and enjoy.
Notes
If your burger press tends to stick, use parchment paper or non-stick spray between the patty and the press to make it easier.
